Feel your way into the rhythm!!!
Hereβs the more technical response:
There are 3 rhythms when riding: side to side/hill – even pedal strokes, jog – one leg dogs deeper/emphasizes the beat, waltz – a 3 count in which lead leg alternates on the count of 1.
You could encourage riders to find the beat with their hands by clapping. You could point out the slow and fast rhythms of each song by clapping as well.
As for resistance, encouraging the rider to feel their resistance in comparison to the beat. Since we ride to the rhythm, while in the saddle, you could have a rider add too much resistance and get off beat, and also have them experience very little on their wheel resulting in legs faster than the beat. Itβs finding enough resistance so your legs are on beat, then once on beat asking yourself can I sustain this, is it too easy, could I add more resistance and keep the beat? You basically master each resistance level so the only way to challenge self is to add more resistance!
Keep in mind, you have too much resistance on your wheel, if your legs are slower than the beat or you jeopardize form; FORM is always MOST important so that you keep practicing correct muscle recruitment patterns to avoid injury and imbalances in muscles which lead to shortening range of motion in joints.
Happy dancing!
