Since Indoor Cycling Magazine head office is in Vancouver, we had the opportunity to try the first Ride Cycle Club in Vancouver. That is located in the Yaletown Neighbourhood. That location was very boutiqish and night club style. Much better then SoulCycle down the road. Unlike SoulCycle, Ride Cycle Club was locally owned and managed. Ride Cycle Club treated everyone like family. So when we heard of their expansion we were not surprised. Not only did they expand to North Vancouver, but expanded right across the country to Toronto Canada.
Ride Cycle Club debuted in Toronto after a months-long underground invite-only setup. Located on Lower Ossington next to Lululemon’s men shop, The Local, it’s a product of Ashley Ander and JJ Wilson, the son of Lululemon founder Chip Wilson and the former brand director at Kit and Ace. Ride is a high-energy workout on a bike done mostly in a dark candlelit room with the instructor at centre stage.
The co-founder says “each ride is designed to tone the core, arms, and legs through a series of smaller bike movements, peaking with a 5-7 minute arm exercise with small weights reinforced by a playlist so well put together, “it’s kind of like going to the club,” says Ashley Ander
In collaboration with design/build construction firm, BUILD It by Design and Architect and Interior Design Team, MGBA, the space has an underground, garage feeling, illuminated by a candlelit walkway you go through before arriving at the crisp, pristine, white studio.
The bikes are spaced so there’s enough room between each rider to feel comfortable. The soundproof studio accommodates 55 riders with three rows of riders towards the stage, and three rows to the side
There’s no such thing as an easy ride here. Once you get on that bike, the intensity level goes up. The style and intensity vary with each instructor, but it will always be an upgraded level of sweat. Every 30 seconds to a minute, you turn up the gear on the bike to mimic an uphill climb while shifting back and forth or swaying side-to-side.
Choreography and unity are really emphasized in class. Instructors train for months and movements like the tap back are prepared with physio and proper form in mind. A single ride is $28. Memberships come in packs of five at $135 and 10 at $260.
