SoulCycle is often described as a cult. And not for no reason: Devotees to the indoor-cycling studio attend classes religiously, brand themselves in SoulCycle gear, and are constantly trying to convert their friends and family.
According to Wikipedia, SoulCycle is a New York City-based fitness company with studios in nine U.S. states. Founded in 2006, it offers indoor cycling (also known as “spinning”) workout classes.
As of 2016, SoulCycle has opened more than 85 locations in the United States and recently arrived in Toronto. SoulCycle offers classes to all age groups with approximately 20,000 people riding at SoulCycle every week and about 440,000 active riders. SoulCycle employs more than 1,500 people.
The company’s reported revenues in 2014 were $112 million, 50% greater from the previous year.. And by now in 2017 we are sure the revenue is getting close to 200 million dollars. Not 20 million but 200 million. Which is why Soulcycle is getting mixed reviews regarding coming to Vancouver.
We spoke to business owners in Yaletown who told us that it is “crazy” to pay about 30 dollars for a 45 minute class. If you make that 3 classes a week that gets expensive. More than a monthly car payment, and there is no equity being accumulated.
Indoor Cycling Magazine tried to contact Stephanie Delisi, the Soul Cycle Manager at Yaletown for a reply, but we guess that Indoor Cycling Magazine was unworthy of a reply. Was it because we don’t promote their 30 dollar classes. OR because we revealed that their bikes have not computers, which usually come with STAGES bikes but they choose not to include them? (See below about the computers) If we are wrong let us know, here is her email email@example.com
Some have questioned if they want to make SoulCycle more millions when you they can help their local community center which also offer Indoor Cycling Classes AND offers fitness equipment such as leg machines, back machines etc.
For those living in Vancouver it is very refreshing to enjoy Indoor Cycling Classes on high-end bikes lead by certified trainers and not have to pay SOULCYCLE RATES. Were you aware that the Indoor Cycling Classes are only 5 bucks a class!!
Which is why SoulCycle makes lots of cash (millions) in some cities, because those cities don’t have the Vancouver model, that is, a community center with high-end Indoor Cycling Classes for only 5 bucks.
We personally attended the West End Community Center in Vancouver and tried one of their classes. After enjoying a high energy workout to great music we were very relieved that there are other choices besides the expensive boutique studios like Spin Society on Granville or SoulCycle in Yaletown.
We might sound like we are betraying some of our readers and fans because many of them enjoy the boutique-style classes and enjoy paying 20 to 30 dollars a class but there are also many people who want to participate in Indoor Cycling classes who cannot afford 30 dollars a class. And that is where the West End Community Centre comes in. Not only do they offer Indoor Cycling Classes, but they also are a full fitness gym. That means everything, such as, weight machines, free-weights, cardio equipment, yoga classes, and showers and lockers, plus a library downstairs !!!
Returning to the subject of SoulCycle let us share with you a quote from Vanity Fair Magazine which describes what we have heard and have experienced ourselves. Please read this quote from Vanity Fair Magazine
SoulCycle rooms are hot and sweaty. The music is deafening, and it’s almost pitch-black. Spinning may sound easy—it’s only riding a bike, after all—but you rarely get to sit in the seat, or “saddle,” as they call it; your body hovers over the bike like a jockey on a horse. After 45 minutes of this, things start to get weird. It’s like a Native American sweat lodge: everyone is in a stunned, near-hallucinatory state,
On the topic of hallucinatory state and SoulCycle staff. We at IndoorCycling.ca, because of all our fans, are considered “Social Influencers” and even leaders in the Indoor Cycling World. We own @IndoorCycling for Instagram and Twitter with over 1000 followers for EACH, and over 1500 followers on Facebook. Plus we can’t forget Pinterest (again @IndoorCycling)
Do you think they will ban the founder of Indoor Cycling Magazine (Johnny Zakharia) from attending classes for writing this review? Where you aware of that in the past SoulCycle banned one of the top fitness leaders in USA? His name is Joey Gonzalez. Here is the story which Indoor Cycling Magazine published.
That is why we need to support our community centres because it is YOU, the community, that keeps it going.
We are sure you will agree with us and we look forward to seeing you there. Here is some info:
